Shushpanov specializes in demography and public health. Since 1998, he has served as a professor at the Western Ukrainian National University. In 2022, he joined the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Issues, NAS of Ukraine, as Head of the Department of Demographic Modeling and Forecasting. He completed research internships at the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2022 and 2024. His current research focuses on active ageing, demographic resilience, and socio-economic inequality.
